1. What and who is P.I.N.K. Backpack?
  • P.I.N.K. Backpack is an ebook series that equips parents with practical guidance to prepare girls for upcoming gender-equality opportunities. Along with developmental psychology counsel, Trish Allison is the founder and writer of the P.I.N.K. Backpack ebook series.

2. Why is your organization called P.I.N.K. Backpack?
  • Two reasons. First, we wanted to use an acronym that redefines a typically-feminine word in a positive, progressive way.  Defining 'pink' as Persistent. Intelligent. Necessary. Kind.  seemed like the right fit. And second, we wanted to target the tween years (ages 8-12) because tweens are just starting to recognize themselves as independent beings. We also wanted to use a metaphor for something that is typical of tweens (backpack) and could be filled by parents with gender-equality guidance.

3. How is P.I.N.K. Backpack different from Internet articles and other girl-power resources?
  • Unlike random Internet articles, P.I.N.K. Backpack ebooks are specifically written for parents who want to help their daughter(s) grasp evolving gender-equality issues and opportunities. For example, the How to Help Your Daughter Respond to Gender Bias handbook provides explicit tips for parents and daughters to discuss gender bias examples together. The handbook then offers specific suggestions for what daughters could say in response to gender-biased situations that emerge in their own lives.

Equally important, P.I.N.K. Backpack handbooks are intentionally written succinctly for busy parents who need immediate, practical, actionable advice. Time wasted surfing the Internet and sifting through long-winded theoretical verbiage is unnecessary; P.I.N.K. Backpack handbooks get right to the point.

4. What age group is P.I.N.K. Backpack for?
  • P.I.N.K. Backpack content is written for parents of tween daughters, ages 8-12. However, we understand that there is a wide spectrum of maturity levels at every age and parents know best what is and isn't appropriate for their own children.

5. What's next for P.I.N.K. Backpack?
There are many more topics we want to cover. Here are a few:
  • How to help your daughter find her passion
  • How to teach your daughter basic entrepreneurial (girlpreneur) skills
  • How dads (specifically) can raise mighty daughters
  • How to help your daughter cope in a world of growing expectations
  • How to help your daughter turn her bossiness into leadership skills
  • How to teach your daughter to glean strength from failure
  • How to teach your son to treat girls with respect (starting with his sister)
  • How to help your daughter find practical experience for her passion
  • How to help your daughter bring her invention to life
The possibilities are endless, including the creation of a similar space for parents of boys who want to help their sons understand their role in the movement toward gender parity.
